On Tuesday, June 4, 2024, the SHCSC Board of School Trustees convened at the Administration building for its monthly meeting to discuss educational issues and act on items requiring Board approval. Below are the highlights of the meeting.

Special Presentations & Recognizations

VPS Architecture - George Link, Vice President of VPS Architecture and project lead for SHCSC's $44.3 million construction project gave an update to the Board on demolition timelines and tentative completion dates.

  • South Central High School upper-level classrooms are likely to be substantially completed by the beginning of school with the exception of a few finishes, such as casework. The gym roof is scheduled to be replaced before the basketball season begins.

  • The football field on Corydon's campus will be ready to be played on by the first game this fall but the track will not be complete until the spring in time for track season.

  • Corydon Elementary School's special education essential skills classrooms are the first to be put back together by the start of the school year.

  • Demolition at Corydon Intermediate School, Corydon Central Junior High and High School, Heth-Washington and New Middletown Elementaries has started or will be beginning within the next week.

Additionally, Mr. Link shared even more exciting news. Every year VPS Architecture offers a scholarship to one school corporation who visits their booth during Indiana School Board of Association's annual conference. This year Board Member Barb Smith visited their booth and entered SHCSC as a potential district to receive the award. At this week's meeting George shared SHCSC was the district selected from that event and presented their scholarship to senior Bethany Walter.

Indiana Department of Education Proposed Diploma Changes - Director of Secondary Curriculum Allison Schalk updated the Board on proposed diploma changes that would go into effect with the class of 2029. In her presentation Allison explained Indiana is exploring a shift from a credit based approach to a points system where high school students would earn a certain number of points across three categories to graduate. The categories would center around coursework, career clusters and earning credentials of value but offer more variety for how students can achieve their points in each section so districts can tailor a student's learning based on a child's needs.

Allison and the Board discussed their concerns such as keeping track of students' points from district to district, supporting students who are college-bound, funding, providing quality internships to meet work-based learning requirements in a rural community and more. IDOE is offering two rounds of feedback for districts and community members to weigh in on their proposal before going to the next step. Allison shared the concerns mentioned above and more in the first round of feedback and encourages anyone who wants to share their thoughts to either contact her at schalka@shcsc.k12.in.us to submit information on their behalf or provide the information directly here.
